What makes education
01.
— Safe
Safety is essential to any learning experience, but current school safety measures focus more on erecting physical barriers between students and the outside world. We understand that everyone needs to do what they can to keep themselves and those they care about safe, but making decisions based on fear keeps none of us safe, and a culture of fear interferes with learning.

— Relevant
Learners are motivated by reaching goals that are relevant to them. Currently, the values in our education system do not align with those of our students, parents, or teachers. Rather than basing a learner’s success on standards or other students’ achievements, it should be determined by personal goals.

— Affirmative
Our goal is to be affirmative rather than transformative. Learning will inherently be a transformative experience, but how that happens should be the learner’s choice. It is not our goal to transform a student into a good employee or our vision of a good citizen, but to give them the tools to understand the world and their place in it.

— Collaborative
Collaboration is more than just students working together; true collaborative programs involve students, parents, educators, and the greater community. We all benefit from creating a better education, and students engaging in the real world should be more than hypothetical. Students should ultimately make their own educational choices, but with an understanding of how their education affects those around them.

— Liberating
The main goal of education should be to help an individual reach their full potential. This means that students need to understand that they can define that better than anyone else. Through choice and self-reliance, learning takes place naturally and leads to people who can and will do amazing things. Our goal is not to create students who will find great jobs, but rather to create students who can go on to do what is important to them.
